Stretching for more than 12 kilometers with parts up to 80 meters wide at high tide,  De Haan Beach is Belgium’s longest beach. Excursions such as sightseeing cruises are offered at some of the larger resorts. 

The beach’s main section has a brick promenade that leads directly to the sand while the western section is hidden behind tall grassy dunes. De Panne Beach

After spending time on the beach, consider catching a ferry from the harbor for a quick trip across the pond to Felixstowe and Kingston-upon-Hull in England. But first, stop by P&Js, the largest chocolate factory on the Belgian coast to sample delicious Belgian chocolates. 

Oostende Beach

The beach at Oostende (also known as Ostende) is one of Belgium’s most popular family beaches and is visited by both Belgian and foreign tourists. Located between Nieuwpoort and  Koksijde, the beach is about seven kilometers long and 80 meters wide. 

Although the beach gets crowded in summer, beachgoers will find plenty of space for sunbathing and walking. Swimming is safe with lifeguards on duty, and plenty of facilities are located nearby. Closed rescue stations indicate that swimming conditions are unsafe. 

Accessible beach crossings and a spacious boulevard lead to shopping streets in the town center. Local cafes, restaurants, and terraces serve lunch, dinner, ice cream, and drinks. The local gray shrimp served in the restaurants are backed by the fascinating 500-year-old tradition of shrimping done on horseback. The tradition has been on UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity since 2013. Between April and September, you can spot the local fishermen in action. 

Middelkerke Beach

Located in the heart of the great Flemish coast west of Ostend, Middelkerke Beach is more than nine kilometers of wide, white-sand beach. If you’re craving sunshine, you’ll be interested to know that Middelkerke has more hours of sunshine than any spot on the Belgian coast. 

Five coastal villages make up the area and all of them have a seafront that is broad and sandy. Several attractions along the beach such as playgrounds, mini golf, and skate ramps make Middelkerke an excellent beach for families with teenagers. Families with younger children will feel comfortable with the orientation poles, wind flags, and swimming instructions strategically placed along the beach. Lifeguards and crossing guards are on duty during July and August.

Blankenberge Beach

Located just 18 kilometers from the historic Belgian city of Bruges, Blankenberge Beach is one of Belgium’s top beach resort towns with six kilometers of sandy beach that is 350 meters wide. All of the resorts face the sea, and the atmosphere is lively. 

One of the most popular attractions at Blankenberge is the famous pier built in the 1930s. The pier has a lengthy jetty that reaches out to the sea and a unique circular building at the end. The pier is more scenic than touristy with stunning views from every angle. You’ll find all the action along the seafront with golf and water sports rentals right at the harbor so you can try kiteboarding, windsurfing, and jet skiing. 

Other ways to enjoy the beach include a Sea Life Marine Park featuring one of Belgium’s largest aquariums. Bredene Beach

Bredene Beach is located on one of the most natural stretches of Belgium’s coastline and features long boardwalks and beach bars. You must cross over dunes to get to the beach where you can dig your toes in the sand and enjoy swimming and picnicking on a spacious sandy beach. It’s a little less touristy than some of the other Belgian beaches and perfect for a day out with the family. 

The sea is safe for swimming as long as all the flags are green. Watch out for the red and yellow flags and stay out of the water and stick to sunbathing or strolling along the shore. You’ll find signs to a walking path for pedestrians only. And if you really enjoy beach strolls, you can actually walk to nearby Ostend with a 5-km roundtrip hike. On the last bit to Ostend, you can hop on a ferry for the rest of the way. 

Koksijde Beach

Koksijde is a tiny beach town in West Flanders. It’s one of Belgium’s less crowded Beaches but with plenty of activities for kids right on a spacious beach that is 10 kilometers long and 50 meters wide on average. A playground called Beach Village is fenced in and younger children can safely enjoy activities like slides and a bouncy house. Further down the beach, there’s a Ferris wheel the whole family will enjoy taking a spin on to admire the views. 

Resort hotels, rental shops, fast food places, and restaurants are located behind a stone-paved boardwalk overlooking the sea. The beach is safe for swimming with lifeguards on duty all summer and a first-aid station. 

Besides the beach, you can take boat excursions to explore the North Sea coast and spend time in town to admire the architecture and visit art museums such as Museum Paul Delvaux featuring oil paintings showcasing Paul Delvaux’s work. You must also pay a visit to the Abbey Museum of the Dunes, an archaeological site founded in the 13th century that was once a Cistercian monastery.

Oostduinkerke Beach

A 50-minute drive to the west of Bruges, Oostduinkerke Beach is a quiet coastal place surrounded by 240 acres of dunes. The reserve area includes de Hage Blekker, the highest dune in Belgium at 33 meters. The sandy beach is almost one kilometer wide at low tide and stretches all the way to Dunkirk in Northern France. 

Interrupting the quiet is the bustling Promenade behind the beach where you’ll find pop-up vendors, shops, and restaurants along the pedestrian street. In the summer, it stops every 10 minutes, and every 20 minutes in winter, so make sure you allow enough time for your journey.

The weather is pleasant during the spring and the fall on Belgium’s beaches, but the water may be too chilly for swimming in the North Sea. Central Plateau

Moving inland (southeast) from the coastal plain is the central plateau of Belgium. It is a slightly higher region that contains a mixture of forest, heath and farming land.

Some of the more specific areas on this plateau include:

• the Hesbaye region (central-east)
• the Pajottenland (central-west)

The plateau is filled with gentle, rolling hills as well as a large series of rivers and streams including some of the most well-known in Belgium: the Schedlt and Meuse rivers.

The High Fens, also known as Hautes Fagnes, is a part of the Ardennes known for its moorlands and peat bogs. This region is close to the German border and contains the highest point in Belgium: Signal de Botrange (694m / 2,277 ft). Eau Rouge Viaduct

• Location: Spa-Francorchamps, Stavelot

One of the longest bridges in Belgium, the Eau Rouge Viaduct, built in 2000, crosses the Eau Roue river near Stavelot. Although it is not particularly significant in terms of its construction, it is famous for another reason. It is part of the Spa-Francorchamps racing circuit and therefore part of the yearly Formula One Belgian Grand Prix in Spa.

Bonifacius Bridge

Named after St Boniface, an English Benedictine monk, this medieval-style bridge only dates back to the early 20th century. It is a very picturesque stone bridge that crosses one of the many canals in Bruges. And canals is certainly something Bruge is known for!

It is very popular with both tourists and photographers because it offers stunning views over the waterways of Bruge and is close to the Church of Our Lady, and right next to Gruuthuse Palace. The Gruuthuse Bridge is also worth visiting as it is right around the corner. It is quite unique to because it has a building (Arents’ House) right on top of it. The only such bridge in Bruge.

Pont de Wandre

• Location: Liège

Built in 1993, this modern cable-stayed bridge spans the majestic Meuse River and the Albert Canal. The bridge actually joins the two Belgian towns of Liege and Herstal, with the N667 crossing over it. So, it is also quite an important transportation link, so you might end up driving over it at some point.

Remouchamps Viaduct

• Location: Remouchamps, Liège

Completed in 1980 as part of the E25 motorway (A26 in Belgium) between Maastricht in the Netherlands to the French border, this is a significant link between the two countries. The Remouchamps Viaduct is also the longest bridge in Belgium with a length of 939 meters.

Pont des Trous

• Length: Approx. 68 meters
• Location: Tournai
• Status: Dismantled

The Pont des Trous before it was dismantled was a stunning 13th-century medieval bridge in Tournai. It was part of the city’s fortifications that included two fortified towers and it indeed used to be quite an iconic landmark.

The dismantling of the central arch of the bridge was quite controversial and there was a lot of protest from locals and historians at the time. However, the greater good was seen in widening one of Belgian’s major waterways – the Schelde. The positive side is that the two original towers were kept as part of the project and the new central span is built in the same style as the original.

Broel Bridge (Broelbrug)

• Location: Kortrijk

Although the bridge is not very long, the Broel Bridge is worth a visit if you love medieval architecture. The Broel Towers (Broeltorens) are an astounding pair of medieval fortified towers in Kortrijk, Belgium. They “tower” over the bridge, right on the River Leie in Kortrijk.

The original bridge has actually been rebuilt many times, including after WWII when the existing structure was destroyed. The current bridge features three simple vaulted stone arches that blend well with the amazing architecture of the towers behind it.

Vroenhoven Bridge

• Length: 195 meters
• Location: Riemst

Connecting Antwerp with Liège over the Albert Canal, this 195-meter bridge is a major traffic thoroughfare in Belgium. However, it also holds historical significance as it was the location of the first German attack on Belgian soil on May 10th, 1940, during World War II.

The is an interactive museum here where you can learn all about the invasion. And there is also a peace flame, standing watch since 2012 on a hill overlooking the bridge.

Pont de Fragnée

The Pont de Fragnée is a Parisian-style bridge that spans the Meuse River in Liege. It was built for the 1905 World Expo and took four years to construct.

The bridge has numerous ornate sculptures, including allegorical representations of the Meuse River, the Ourthe River, and the city of Liège. It also features four tall columns topped with golden statues symbolizing Science, Industry, Agriculture, and Fine Arts.

As such, it is quite a noteworthy landmark in Liege and definitely worth visiting when you are in town.

Pont de Jambes

• Length: 145 meters
• Location: Namur

The Pont de Jambes, or “Pont de Meuse,” is an ancient stone bridge that spans the Meuse River in Namur. The bridge has had many forms over the centuries and dates back to Roman times. It has been rebuilt many times and is now a stone bridge with seven arches, the central one having been enlarged in the 60s to accommodate larger ships on the river.

Charles de Gaulle Bridge

• Length: 54 meters
• Location: Dinant

The last bridge in this list is an unusual one. Although it has nothing of particular note in terms of structure or span, it pays tribute to two people in European history. First, the bridge is named after Charles de Gaulle, the former president of France and a leader of the Free French Forces during World War II. He was actually held captive in Dinant during World War I.

Second, there are a series of whimsical colored saxophones along the bridge, which pay tribute to Albert Sax, the inventor of the instrument, who was born and raised here.

Les Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure

The Eau d’Heure lakes are a group of five man-made lakes that were built in the 1970s for water supply and the generation of hydroelectric power. They are about 100 kilometers south of Brussels, close to the cities of Cerfontaine and Froidchapelle. With a surface area of 3.74 square kilometers, Lake de la Plate Taille is the largest of the Eau d’Heure lakes.

Swimming, sailing, windsurfing, and fishing are some of the adventure sports you can participate in around Les Lacs de l’Eau d’Heure  The Centre Sportif de l’Eau d’Heure, which offers a variety of water sports equipment, is one of many venues near the lakes where you can rent equipment.

Lac de la Gileppe

In the eastern region of Belgium, close to the village of Jalhay, lies Lake Gileppe. It was initially built in the nineteenth century for the local textile industry. The lake has a surface size of 1.3 square kilometers and is surrounded by picturesque hills and woods.

Bütgenbach Lake

Like most forests in Belgium, the management team has also ensured there are lots to do there too. From hiking and mountain biking to walking the dog or having a picnic.

Hallerbos

Hallerbos is the Belgian forest everything talks about on Instagram. It is famous for the mind-blowing carpet of bluebell flowers that cover the forest every spring. High Fens

Muziekbos
