In 2018, a noteworthy event captured the attention of Belgians and wildlife enthusiasts alike: a wolf sighting in the northeast province of Limbourg.

The sighting marked the first confirmed presence of a wild wolf in Belgium in over a century.

It opened conversations about conservation efforts, habitat preservation, and living with species that had been absent for generations.

In this article, we’ll discuss the historical presence of wolves in Belgium, including their recent appearance, conservation efforts, and related concerns.

The Historical Presence of Wolves in Belgium

Wolf lying on the ground

Wolves were once a common sight in Belgium, roaming freely across the county’s forested landscapes and contributing to the balance of its ecosystem.

They were even held in high regard in the Middle Ages due to their symbolic importance in local folklore and mythology.

But as decades turned into centuries, and human populations and agricultural activities expanded, wolves transitioned from revered symbols of legends to threats to livestock and safety.

Sheep, calves, and goats rarely survived a night with wolves living in the vicinity, leading to significant losses for those who depended on these animals for food and work.

By the 19th century, Belgium had had enough.

Government-sanctioned hunting campaigns, as well as local efforts from farmers, doubled its efforts to eliminate the wolves by any means necessary.

There was no mercy: the wolves were hunted for sport, poisoned, and trapped to protect livestock and human interests.

In the 1890s, the last wolf in Belgium was shot by none other than King Leopold II—or so the story goes.

Habitat loss, intensive hunting, and aggressive eradication efforts took a great toll on the wolf population, driving them to local extinction within the country at the turn of the 20th century.

The Recent Resurgence of Wolves in Belgium

Brown wolf

For over a century, wolves were considered an afterthought: a distant memory of Belguim’s past, a mythical presence in old books and folklore.

But amid the hustle of modern life, the early 21st century saw the gradual emergence of reports and the occasional undeniable evidence of wolves—tracks in the snow, blurry images captured by remote cameras, etc.

However, these encounters were never confirmed and therefore not considered an official spotting.

That changed in January 2018, when a radio-collared wolf from Germany made its way into Flanders, one of Belgium’s three regions.

The two-year-old female, affectionately named Naya, was spotted near a military zone in Beringen in the province of Limburg.

A few months later, a male wolf was spotted in the High Fens of Wallonia.

And the sightings continued from there.

As of 2023, 15 to 25 wolves are believed to inhabit Belgium: one pack in Flanders and another in southern Wallonia.

Concerns on Public Safety & Livestock Predation

Tan wolf on flower field

The gradual appearance of wolves in Belgium has sparked a lot of debate in the local community, especially in rural areas where livestock is widespread.

Despite their small numbers, dozens of sheep have already fallen victim to wolf predation, impacting the livelihood of agricultural communities.

The situation became so dire that it sparked various protests across the country, with 3,000 locals joining a demonstration in 2021.

People hung images of dead sheep on fences with the text, “This is the work of the wolf,” highlighting their frustration towards the predators.

Protesters didn’t hold malice towards wolves; on the contrary, they recognized their importance to the ecosystem. Instead, the protest was a message to the government.

Johan Schouteden, who lost dozens of sheep due to wolf attacks, told BBC News that he isn’t opposed to living with these predators—within reason.

“I want to live with the wolf,” he says. “As long as we get paid for all the extra labor and work we have to do to keep them at bay”.

Apart from the loss of livestock, Belgian citizens also feared for their personal safety.

Wolves are predatory creatures, and their presence in the landscape opens the possibility of human attacks.

While it’s true that wolves generally avoid humans and rarely pose a threat, they won’t hesitate to attack if threatened or if the opportunity presents itself.

Conservation Efforts for Wolf Population in Belgium

Red and gray wolf

Belgium made significant efforts to protect the wolf population and ensure their continued existence.

According to the European Wilderness Society, the government of Limburg passed some of the strictest laws ever seen to protect the wolves in the region.

Wolves are given the same protection as the European beaver and the otter.

Hunting of any kind is prohibited and poachers can face fines of up to €500,000 and jail time of five years.

Other measures are put in place, as well. Forest rangers—alongside inspectors from the Flemish Agency for Nature and Forests—would regularly monitor the wolves’ movements and behavior.

The government likewise implemented non-lethal strategies to safeguard livestock.

“Problematic” wolves can be shot at with paintball guns to re-associate people with danger, but anything more drastic can result in penalties.

The Future of Wolves in Belgium

Wolf on snow

With careful management strategies and collaborative efforts in the local community, there’s growing optimism about the future of wolves in Belgium.

Experts believe that the wolf population will increase by at least 30% annually.

Belgium is generally a very safe country by world standards. However, it’s important to keep safety in mind when planning a trip to any county

Crime rates in Belgium are relatively low, and most travelers experience no issues during their stay. However, petty theft and pickpocketing can be a concern, particularly in busy, tourist-heavy areas such as Brussels.

of course, you should always take safety precautions when traveling, but also stay up to date with any threats of terrorism or travel advisories when you are abroad.

Key Takeaways

Belgium is generally a safe destination with low crime rates, but travelers should still exercise caution and be aware of potential risks.

Petty theft and pickpocketing are concerns in busy areas; stay vigilant and protect your belongings.

Despite the ongoing terrorism threat, Belgium’s public transportation system remains safe and reliable.

General Safety in Belgium

As I mentioned above, Belgium is generally considered a safe country for travelers. However, in bigger cities like Brussels and Antwerp, you should be aware that petty theft and pickpocketing can occur, especially in crowded areas or on public transportation. To protect your belongings, keep a close eye on your personal items and consider using a secure travel bag with anti-theft features.

Terrorism has also been a challenge in Belgium, although the risk level has decreased in recent years. Visitors should always be vigilant, stay informed about local news and events, and follow the advice of local authorities. By exercising a high degree of caution and following travel safety tips, tourists can better protect themselves from potential threats.

When exploring the major cities in Belgium, such as

Brussels

Antwerp

Ghent

Travelers should avoid dark and deserted areas at night, especially if they are unfamiliar with the area. It’s also a good practice to stick to well-lit streets and make use of the buddy system when possible. By doing so, you can effectively minimize the risk of encountering issues while moving around in Belgian cities.

Crime Rates and Types

In this section, we will discuss various crime rates and types in Belgium, including violent crime, theft and burglaries, as well as scams and fraud.

Violent Crime

Violent crimes in Belgium are relatively low compared to other countries. Intentional homicides can occur as a result of various factors, such as domestic disputes, interpersonal violence, and gang-related conflicts over turf or control1. However, these incidents are generally limited in number and are not committed by large, organized groups.

Theft and Burglaries

Belgium experiences typical theft and burglary rates, like many other European countries. The occurrence of these crimes tends to be higher in the bigger cities, like most crime. Nonetheless, the overall safety in Belgium remains comparatively good, with large cities such as Brussels being considered safer than those in nearby European countries.

Scams and Fraud

Scams and fraud are also present in Belgium, as in any other country. Tourists and residents alike should remain vigilant and cautious, particularly when visiting tourist hotspots or engaging in online transactions. Being aware of the various methods used by scammers can help you avoid falling victim to such crimes.

Footnotes

Belgium Crime Rate & Statistics 1990-2023

Transportation Safety

Road Safety

Belgium has a well-developed road infrastructure, and the authorities closely monitor and enforce traffic regulations. Despite these efforts, road accidents still occur, with 4.3 road fatalities per 100,000 population recorded in 2020. The main causes of accidents include

speeding

distracted driving

driving under the influence

To address these concerns, stricter control of speed limits, black-spot treatment, and infrastructure adjustments are implemented. Pedestrians, cyclists, and motorcyclists should exercise caution, as they are also involved in accidents, accounting for 13%, 17%, and 19% of fatalities, respectively. Wearing appropriate safety gear, staying visible, and following traffic rules can significantly reduce the risk of accidents.

Public Transport

Belgium’s public transportation system is reliable and safe, including buses, trams, and trains. However, travelers are advised to be vigilant as pickpockets and thieves are known to frequent these modes of transport. According to Travel Safe – Abroad, pickpocketing risk is high in public transport.

To protect oneself from these risks, be aware of your surroundings, keep personal belongings secure, and avoid displaying valuable items or electronics. Additionally, try to travel in well-lit, crowded areas, and avoid isolated stations or platforms, especially during late hours.

If you are heading to Brussels, particularly Bruxelles-Midi or Brussel-Zuid, then I recommend not walking directly to your destination. Instead, take a local bus to get around. It is what the locals do and will help you avoid the most dodgy area of town.

Likewise, if you arrive at Antwerp Central station, particularly at night, try to catch a tram or hail an Uber or taxi to avoid walking around and attracting attention.

Travel Safety Tips

When planning a trip to Belgium, it is essential to keep safety in mind. Below are a few key areas to consider, including emergency numbers and personal safety precautions.

Emergency Numbers

In case of emergencies, familiarize yourself with Belgium’s emergency numbers. Dialing 112 will connect you to the police, fire, and medical assistance services. It is crucial to have this number at hand in case of any unfortunate incident during your travel.

Personal Safety Precautions

While Belgium is generally a safe country, it is essential to take standard safety and security precautions. Always be aware of your surroundings, especially in crowded tourist areas and train stations. Pickpocketing and petty theft may occur, so keep your personal belongings secure at all times.

When traveling on public transportation, remain vigilant and be cautious of strangers who might approach you. At night, avoid walking alone in unfamiliar or poorly lit areas. Stick to well-traveled streets and populated areas where possible.

Additionally, Belgium faces a risk of terrorism, and travelers should exercise increased caution. Stay informed about any safety-related updates, and be prepared to follow the advice of local authorities. Taking these safety precautions into consideration will help ensure a more enjoyable and secure visit to Belgium.

Belgium and Germany are two of the most well-known countries in Europe. And unfortunately, their flags are so similar, they are often confused

The Belgium flag and the German flag both feature a black, yellow, and red color scheme. Of course, there are still some slight differences.

The Belgian flag has vertical stripes, with black on the left, yellow in the middle, and red on the right.

The German flag, on the other hand, has horizontal stripes, with black on the top, red in the middle, and gold on the bottom.

The yellow in the Belgian flag is a brighter shade than the gold in the German flag, making it easier to tell the two flags apart. At least to discerning eyes!

Why Are The Flags So Similar?

Brabant coat of arms

There are a few theories about why these two flags are so similar. Some believe that the colors are inspired by the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant, which was a powerful medieval state that covered parts of Belgium and the Netherlands.

Others believe that the colors were chosen because they represent the principles of liberty, unity & fraternity.

Regardless of their origins, the similarities between the two flags are undeniable and it is something that annoys many Belgians to no end (being mistaken for Germans!).

Historical Background of The Flags

Origins of Belgian Flag

The Belgian flag was first adopted in 1831 after Belgium declared independence from the Netherlands. The colors of the flag were taken from the coat of arms of the Duchy of Brabant, as I mentioned above.

These colors were adopted by the local population and used in numerous uprisings. This original flag had horizontal stripes and was used during the Belgian Revolution of 1830. The current design with vertical stripes was adopted in 1831 and is believed to have changed from horizontal to vertical because of the French flag which had such a format.

Origins of German Flag

The German flag was first adopted in 1919 during the Weimar Republic, which was between World War I and World War II.

The colors of the flag have a long history. Black and gold were the colors of the Holy Roman Empire, which existed between 962 and 1806. Red and white were the colors of the Hanseatic League, which was a powerful trading alliance in Northern Europe during the Middle Ages.

Symbolism & Design

The flags of Belgium and Germany have different designs and colors, each with its own unique symbolism.

The Belgian Flag

The Belgian flag is composed of three equal size vertical stripes of equal width with the colors black, yellow, and red. Each of these colors has its own meaning:

Black represents the determination and strength of the Belgian people.

Yellow symbolizes the country’s wealth and resources.

Red represents the blood that was shed during the country’s struggle for independence.

The German Flag

The German flag, on the other hand, is composed of three equal horizontal stripes of black, red, and gold, each of equal height. The German flag is a rectangle that conforms to a ratio of 3:5 (height:width).

Each of these colors has its own meaning:

Black represents the determination and strength of the German people.

Red symbolizes the country’s struggle for freedom and democracy.

Gold represents the country’s economic prosperity.

René Magritte (1898-1967)

René Magritte – Memory [c.1957] – Image courtesy of Gandalf’s Gallery

Surrealist artist René Magritte was one of Belgian’s most famous artists and produced some of history’s best-known works. Magritte’s paintings were depictions of ordinary objects presented in the most extraordinary ways. The result was thought-provoking masterpieces that bordered the line between reality and representation. For example, Magritte’s iconic Ceci n’est pas une pipe (This is not a pipe) is actually a depiction of a pipe.

The famous surrealist from Belgium has influenced pop art, conceptual art, and minimalist art in more modern times. His most notable works include The Empire of Light and Les Amants. You can admire his works at the Magritte Museum in Brussels which is dedicated to him and at some of the world’s most notable museums including the Metropolitan Art Museum (MET) and the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) in New York City.

Huga wan der Goes suffered from depression and once tried to commit suicide. Explore his paintings at the MET in New York.

James Ensor (1860-1949)

Even living away from the big city, he managed to significantly influence every facet of Belgian modernist art from expressionism to symbolism to surrealism and Dada. His signature style was the use of capricious color and distortion of form.

Ensor experienced rejections and disappointments in his early career, leading him to feature grotesque figures such as skeletons, masks, and puppets in his work. The style became a defining characteristic of his work, and he finally became a dominant figure in the modernist art movement. He was a member of Les XX, an artistic group formed by 20 Belgian painters, designers, and sculptors.

Ensor’s best-known painting is the stunning Christ’s Entry into Brussels in 1889. Completed in 1988, the post-impressionist painting is a parody of the triumphal entry of Jesus into Jerusalem celebrated on Palm Sunday. The composition was a precursor to Expressionism. It is on display at the J Paul Getty Museum in Malibu, California.

Jan Van Eyck (1390-1441)

Jan Van Eyck, The Arnolfini Portrait – Iamge courtesy of Steven Zucker, Smarthistory co-founder

Flemish Primitives painter Jan Van Eyck was one of Europe’s greatest painters during his lifetime. His emphasis on naturalism and realism revolutionized the Gothic style. He was an inspiration for a generation of later painters with his technique of oil-based color mixing.

Surviving records indicate that Jan Van Eyck was born in the late 14th century in Limburg, now present-day Belgium. He worked as a master painter in several roles including court painter to Philip the Good, Duke of Burgundy. Philip paid him well so that he was secure enough to “paint whatever he pleased.” Around 1429, he moved to Bruges, Belgium where he lived until his death.

Jan Van Eyck’s works had both secular and religious themes and included commissioned portraits, altarpieces, single-panel religious figures, diptychs, triptychs, and polyptych panels. He is most remembered for the painting the Arnolfini Portrait and the Adoration of the Mystic Lamb. You will see it hanging in the St. Bavo Cathedral in Ghent.

Jacob Jordaens (1593-1678)

Jacob Jordaens, The Rape of Europa – Image courtesy of jean louis mazieres

Flemish painter Jacob Jordaens was born in Antwerp, Belgium, and lived there his entire life. Unlike his contemporaries, he never studied abroad and his travel was limited to short trips to the Netherlands, Flanders, and Luxembourg. He was also a draughtsman and designed prints and tapestries. His paintings included mythological, biblical, landscapes, allegorical compositions, genre scenes, and portraits.

After the deaths of Peter Paul Rubens and Anthony van Dyck, Jordaens became the leading painter of Flemish Baroque. He dismissed his contemporaries’ courtly aspirations through art that lacked idealism. Instead, his main influencers were northern Italian painters such as Paolo Veronese, Jacopo Bassano, and Caravaggio.

Jordaean’s principal patrons were local churches and the wealthy bourgeoisie. However, late in his career, he received royal commissions from King Charles I of England, the Dutch Republic, and Queen Christina of Spain.

Jacob Jordaens is best remembered for his large-scale genre scenes, As the Old Sing, So Pipe the Young, and The King Drinks (also known as Feast of the Bean King.)

Rogier Van Der Weyden (1399-1464)

Rogier Van Der Weyden, Sforza – Triptych – Image courtesy of Kotomi_

Born in Tournai, Belgium, Rogier Van Der Weyden was an Early Netherlandish painter who became one of the most influential Northern painters of the 15th century. He was so successful, his paintings were exported to Italy and Spain. He received commissions from foreign princes and other important people.

Van Der Weden lived and painted during the same era as Jan van Dyck and surpassed van Dyck’s fame in Europe during the latter part of the 15th century. But due to changing tastes in art, his fame didn’t withstand the test of time. Today, he is rightly remembered as one of the best Early Flemish painters. He mostly painted portraits and religious triptychs. They were characterized by a broad range of colors and sympathetic expressions.

Several museums house collections by Van der Weyden including New York City, London, and Washington, DC.

Belgian Jan Brueghel the Elder was born in Brussels as the son of Pieter Brueghel the Elder. He was a court painter of Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II. As a painter of depictions of pheasant life, he became a pioneer in genre painting. His works of art give an invaluable insight into the customs of folklife centuries ago. Together with his friend and colleague Peter Paul Reubens, he was one of the leading Flemish painters of the first half of the 17th century.

Jan Brueghel the Elder painted in several genres including flower still lifes, landscapes, seascapes, village scenes, allegorical and mythological scenes, and paintings of hell and the underworld. You can admire his paintings at the Royal Museum of Fine Arts of Belgium in Brussels.

The eldest son of the legendary Pieter Brueghel the Elder, Pieter Brueghel the Younger was also a Flemish painter. In addition to re-creating his father’s works, he is also known for several original works of his own, mostly depicting scenes of rural life. Copies of his father’s work helped spread Pieter the Elder’s image internationally thanks to his studio’s large output and the local and export market.

It was once believed that Pieter the Younger authored paintings of hellfire and our grotesque imagery; therefore he was given the nickname “Hell Brueghel.” It was later determined that they were the paintings of his brother Jan Brueghel the Elder.

Pieter the Younger’s paintings can be seen in museums in cities like Amsterdam and Paris.

One of the most interesting and enjoyable ways to learn about Belgium’s history is with a visit to one of the many abbeys. Built long ago, they can tell us stories about the past. Nuns or monks live at some of the abbeys and focus on work, prayer, and meditation. Members of some convents crafting goods for sale to help with living expenses. Some have become cultural centers, while others are even tourist attractions.

Travelers can find peaceful and serene lodging for the night or maybe longer for a unique getaway at several old abbeys. Many of them operate craft beer breweries, creating some of Belgium’s best beers, and also cheese plants and share samplings with their guests.

Tap into culture and history with a stay at one of these Belgian abbeys.

Rochefort Abbey

Rocheport Abbey © Wikipedia

Rochefort Abbey (also known as Notre-Dame-de-Saint-Rémy) is situated in Namur, the capital city of the Wallonia region. Today, it’s known for its brewery and is one of the country’s few remaining Trappist monasteries. The beer production is deliberately limited, and brewery tours aren’t allowed, but you can explore the surrounding grounds. The beer is brewed using pure water drawn from a spring near the abbey and a specific yeast.

The abbey is also known for its long, fascinating history. Founded in 1230, the Trappist abbey was established as a Cistercian monastery for nuns and replaced by Trappist monks during the 15th century. The abbey was invaded in the late 18th century during the French Revolution and then sold and demolished to make room for a farm. In 1887, it was returned to the Achel Abbey monastery and began its brewery operation in 1889.

In the latter part of the 19th century, the abbey was restored and new buildings were raised. By the mid-20th century, the abbey was producing enough beer to be sold.

Orval Abbey

Orval Abbey

You’ll find Orval Abbey in Villers-devant-Orval in the region of Florenville, Wallonia in a lush, forested setting that is especially tranquil. The abbey is known for its spiritual life, rich history, and production of Trappist beer Orval. The abbey also has a cheese factory and a bakery.

The stories you’ll hear about Orval Abbey go all the way back to its founding by the Benedictines in the 11th century when it was part of the Order of Cîteaux. It endured wars and fires throughout history and was devastated during the French Revolution. The buildings were abandoned after secularization at the end of the 18th century. The monastery was rebuilt in 1926 and established as an abbey again in 1936. Its popular brewery began operating in 1931.

One particularly endearing story you’ll hear is connected to the Orval beer logo, a trout with a ring in its mouth. A legend dating back to the 11th century claims that Countess Mathilde lost her wedding ring in a nearby spring and the fish appeared with her ring in its mouth, so she founded the abbey on this spot.

Our Lady of Nazareth Abbey

Our Lady of Nazareth Abbey – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

Our Lady of Nazareth (also known as Brecht Abbey) can be visited in Brecht in the province of Antwerp. Life here is characterized by the three elements of Trappist life—prayer, reading, and manual labor. The nuns produce several products such as cosmetics, cleaning products, and handcrafted banners and flags.

The abbey’s early history dates back to 1236 when a group of Cistercian nuns founded the monastery of Our Lady of Nazareth at Lier. The abbey flourished for five centuries and closed in 1797 after the Austrian Netherlands was occupied by the French Revolutionary Army. But even after the Belgian Revolution of 1830, the abbey did not recover. It wouldn’t be until the 20th century when a group of 13 nuns was granted land that the Brecht Abbey would open in 1951.

Val-Dieu Abbey

Val-Deiu Abbey – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

If you want to tour an authentic Belgian Abbey brewery, you’ll definitely enjoy the Val-Deiu Abbey, a former Cistercian monastery. Located in the province of Liège near Aubel, Val-Dieu is a stunning abbey surrounded by manicured lawns and a spacious park.

Public tours are offered for both the abbey and the brewery. The price is very reasonable at 7 Euros for the abbey and 6 euros to tour the abbey. Although the tours are given in French, you can book a tour in four other languages if you make a reservation. Adding to the enjoyment is both beer and cheese tasting.

The tour guides will tell you plenty of historical tales about the abbey amidst the abbey’s unique architecture and marvelous collection of artworks. You’ll learn how the abbey’s original church was destroyed during the War of the Limburg Succession, rebuilt, then destroyed again in the Eighty Years’ War, and once again by Louis XIV’s armies in 1683. Finally, it was dissolved after the church was destroyed for the fourth time during the French Revolution.

Val-Dieu Abbey sat unoccupied until 1844 when the last living monk and four others resettled there. Much later in 2001, it closed again after the last three monks left. In 2002, a small community resettled under the leadership of a rector associated with the Cistercian Order.

Keizersberg Abbey

Keizersberg Abbey – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

For those with a keen interest in ancient history, The Keizersberg Abbey is the place to go. One of the most popular Benedictine monasteries, it sits atop Mont César in the university town of Leuven. The name Keizerberg translates to Ceasar’s Hill, and according to legend, it’s the site of a former castle with historical links to Julius himself.

You won’t be able to tour this abbey since it’s not open to the public, and no beer is produced here. The buildings are now a dormitory for university students and no monks live here. But the grounds are a beautiful place for quiet meditation and enjoying views of the city. You’ll find a large sanctuary amidst lovely public gardens. And it’s surrounded by a wall that you can easily re-imagine as a medieval fortress.

Our Lady of Soleilmont Abbey

Our Lady of Soleilmont – © Wikipedia

Our Lady of Soleilmont is located in Fleurus in the open green space surrounding the city of Charleroi. Its history can be traced all the way back to the 12th century. A serious fire devasted most of the buildings in 1963. In 1973, the sisters moved into the new Soleilmont Abbey just a stone’s throw away from where the original one sat.

Today, a community of Trappistine nuns lives a quiet life here meditating and working in their Eucharistic bread bakery where they bake bread for sale to provide for living expenses. They also sew beautiful liturgical vestments sold in their monastery shop along with books, artwork, and other items.

Visit Our Lady of Soleilmont Abbey shop every day from 9:15 am to 7:00 pm. They sell their fresh bread on Fridays beginning at 1:00 pm.

Achel Abbey

Achel Abbey – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

The Achel Abbey is home to a famous Trappist brewery, one of the fewest of its kind in the world. Along with work at the brewery, other activities include fulfilling the three elements of Trappist life—working, meditating, and reading.

Located in Hamont-Achel, the abbey was first built as a chapel in 1656. In 1686, it became a hermitage, and almost two centuries later, the building was converted into a priory, and finally into a Trappist abbey in 1871. A fully operational brewery was established as early as 1852, but the renowned brewery it is today wasn’t established until 1998.

Like many other Belgian monasteries, Achel Abbey didn’t escape the ravages of war. The community was expelled in 1789 when the Austrian Netherlands was invaded by the French Revolution army.

The monks were forced to leave the abbey again in 1914 after World War I broke out. After the war, a new abbey was built (1946-1952) but only partially completed. Most of the abbey’s land was sold to the Flemish Government and the Dutch National Forest Administration in 1989.

With support from the Trappists of Rochefort and Westmalle, brewing started at the abbey again in 1998.

Westmalle Abbey

© 2023 Westmalle Abbey

The Trappist Abbey of Westmalle is located in the province of Antwerp in the town of Westmalle. Also known as the Abbey of Our Lady of the Sacred Heart, it’s the oldest Trappist monastery that is still active. It was founded in 1794 after a ban on monastic life in France sent French Cistercians fleeing the country.

Westmalle Abbey is known for its spiritual life and the Westmalle Trappist beer brewery. The beer it produces is a popular beer in Belgium and is a model for other “abbey beers,” although these beers may not necessarily come from an abbey brewery.

Tours of the brewery aren’t allowed, but there is a walking trail around the abbey that provides historic information at various points. Across the street at Cafe Trappisten you can view a film about the brewery and sample Westmalle beer. The cafe will also provide a leaflet that guides you around the abbey.

Maredsous Abbey

Maredsous abbey

The abbey’s setting, along with neo-Gothic buildings, beautiful gardens, and a monastery and church open to the public makes it appealing to a variety of tourists.

Tours are offered to explore the gardens, the buildings, the cheese dairy museum, the ceramics workshop, and more. There’s a playground for children, an onsite cafeteria, and a souvenir shop. Listen out for tales about the abbey’s founding, Pope Leo XIII, and the Congregation of Beuron.

Scourmont Abbey

Scourmont Abbey – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

Home to one of the few Trappist breweries in the world, you’ll find Scourmont Abbey in Forges Village, Hainaout province. It was founded in 1850 when a group of monks settled on Scourmont Plateau near Chimay. A brewery was established in 1863, and the priory gained abbey status in 1871. In 1876, the community started a farm and a cheese factory where they made cheese using milk from the farm.

The thriving abbey would not be impervious to world conflict. It was occupied by the Germans, but the monks regained possession after the war.

Today, the Chimay Brewery produces four kinds of Belgian beers. The brewery isn’t open to the public, but you can book a stay at the onsite Espace Chimay Inn where you will learn the stories behind the abbey’s history and its famous brewery. The chapel and gardens are open to the public where you can enjoy the peaceful, forested surroundings.

St. Sixtus Abbey

St. Sixtus Abbey – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

St. Sixtus Abbey has the distinction of being the place where the beer it brews has been named the world’s best beer several times. Called Westvleteren beer, the beer is rare since production is limited to about 4800 hectolitres per year.

The abbey’s history dates back to 1831 when it was established on the site where a hop merchant lived as a hermit 17 years earlier. The brewery was established in 1838 by Trappist monks.

Besides the award-winning beer, St. Sixtus Abbey is famous for its spiritual life. The abbey and brewery aren’t open to the public, but you can book a stay and the guest house. The 20 rooms are simply furnished, and vegetarian meals are served and eaten in silence with music in the background. Pray and burn a candle in the pilgrim chapel.

Park Abbey

Park Abbey – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

Park Abbey is located in Flemish Brabant in Heverlee to the south of Leuven. The Premonstratensian abbey was founded in the 12th century and has been astonishingly well preserved. It has remained inhabited since its founding. Most of the buildings were built during the 17th and 18th centuries.

The abbey reconstructed the Braxatorium Parcensis brewery after the original one was sold as scrap metal during the French Revolution. The beer brewed here isn’t the classic Trappist beer, but it’s a tasty Belgian brew and can be sampled on the grounds.

Park Abbey is open to the public. Learn about its rich history all around the grounds and visit a cemetery where legendary figures from Leuven lay at rest. The abbey grounds have nature paths for hiking and cycling.

Belgium is renowned for two things from what I have seen – beer and chocolate. And in this post I am going to cover the former!

With over 400 breweries and a history of brewing that dates back to the Middle Ages, it is no surprise that this small northern European country is a treasure trove of beers. Below is a quick dive into 14 iconic Belgian beer brands that I believe you should know about. They are not the most niche or the most unusual, but they are well-loved, varied, and well worth checking out if you are new to the Belgian Beer scene.

Leffe

Leffe Beer bar at the Brussel Airport

Leffe is a classic Belgian Abbey ale, that I have been drinking for decades. It has actually been brewed since 1240 at the Abbey of Leffe in the Ardennes. The classic Leffe that most people drinks are known for its deep, golden color and rich, full-bodied taste. It is actually quite a common beer to see around Belgium and quite frankly, around the world too. Their flagship beer is the lighter Leffe Blond which has a malty, fruity flavor with a hint of bitterness. It’s easy to drink, especially on a warm day. They have a few other variants like Leffe Brune, which is heavier, but tastier if you ask me. And the far more alcoholic Leffe Triple, with its own unique taste. So, if you see one at your local pub or supermarket, give it a try!

Chimay

Chimay blue beer

Chimay is another famous Belgian beer that I have been consuming for far too long. It has been exported around the world for many years, so you might have already seen it around. It has a long and rich history dating back to 1862, and like many a world-class Belgian beer belongs to a monastery. Like with Leffe, there are three main types of Chimay you will find on the shelves: Chimay Blue, Red, and White. They vary in intensity, body, and alcohol level (which is usually way above what you are used to) and are quite fruity and spicy.

Duvel

Duvel Beer (Image courtesy of Bernt Rostad on Flickr)

Continuing with the more well-known, but still very tasty Belgian beers. Let’s talk about Duvel. It actually translates to “Devil” in English and is a strong golden ale that is considered one of the benchmarks for this type of beer. It is produced by the Duvel Moortgat Brewery, and I always see the factory on the way to the airport, so it’s often on my mind! It also has a high alcohol content of 8.5% owing to its unique fermentation process and a generous amount of hops.

Tripel Karmeliet

Tripel Karmeliet (Image courtesy of Wikimedia)

This Belgian beer is a specific beer rather than a brewery. Tripel Karmeliet is a complex and well-balanced Belgian Tripel brewed by Bosteels Brewery. Although this award-winning beer was only released in 1996, it is based on a recipe that dates back to 1679. It uses a unique mix of three grains—barley, oats, and wheat—which gives it a rich, creamy, and slightly spicy flavor profile. It is no wonder this beer has won awards.

Rochefort Trappist

Rochefort Trappist Beer

Like many Belgian beers, the Rochefort Trappist beers are brewed within the walls of an Abbey. Specifically the Abbey of Notre-Dame de Saint-Rémy in the Ardennes. Again, like many breweries in this country, they offer three varieties of beer—Rochefort 6, 8, and 10. Each beer has its own distinct character and flavor profile. In general, the beers are known for their rich, malty sweetness and complex, fruity notes, making them a must-try for fans of Trappist ales.

Orval

Orval beer

Orval is another famous Trappist beer, produced at the Orval Abbey in the Gaume region of Belgium. They are also often seen around the pubs of Belgium, so although they are not as famous as the earlier beers in this list, you might know them. They produce beer with a distinct amber color and unique, funky taste, That Orval taste is due to the Brettanomyces yeast used during the secondary fermentation process. The beer has a complex flavor profile, with notes of fruit, spice, and a mild bitterness that makes it a favorite among beer connoisseurs.

La Chouffe

La Chouffe beer and glass

A beer that is being promoted a lot since last year is La Chouffe. I actually discovered it while visiting the Ardennes last year, but have since seen it everywhere I go. It is quite a unique beer that was only developed recently (by Belgian beer standards). Two guys started it in a small garage in the 70s, and slowly added to their repertoire. The flagship beer is an unfiltered blond beer, but I love their IPA. Their charming gnome-themed brewery produced a rich, fruity, and slightly spicy flavor profile, with a refreshing, crisp finish.

Delirium Tremens

Delirium Tremems beer cases

Delerium Tremens, produced by the Huyghe Brewery, is a Belgian Strong Pale Ale with a unique pink elephant logo that has become instantly recognizable among beer lovers. I actually used to drink it back in university, never really knowing its origins or heritage. It is a Belgian beer with a golden color and high carbonation that has a mix of fruity and spicy flavors, as well as a potent 8.5% alcohol content. It is no wonder it’s so alcoholic given that Delirium Tremens means withdrawal symptoms from alcohol, something you usually only see in alcoholics!

Westmalle

Crates of Westmalle beer

Ask any Belgian and they will know Westmalle. It is a Trappist brewery that has been producing exceptional beers since 1836. They produce two main varieties: Westmalle Dubbel and Westmalle Tripel. The Dubbel (or double) is a dark, malty brew with notes of caramel, chocolate, and dried fruit. Their Tripel is a golden ale with a complex flavor profile that includes fruit, spice, and a touch of bitterness.

De Koninck

De Koninck beer

De Koninck is produced by the brewery of the same name which is an icon of the city of Antwerp. They produce a classic Belgian Pale Ale with a beautiful amber color that has a balanced mix of malt and subtle hops. They are renowned for their easy-drinking beers, so if you are hesitant to get into the deep and complex flavors that Belgian beers offer, this might be a good starting point for you.

Kwak

Kwak beer and fries (Image courtesy of Wikimedia)

A beer with a wacky name and a seriously crazy glass to go with it is Kwak. It is a strong Belgian Amber Ale that is famous for its distinctive, hourglass-shaped glass. I actually got one as a wedding attendee gift from a lovely Belgian lady I know but I rarely drink the beer. I tried it again this year and really enjoyed it It is actually brewed by Bosteels Brewery, the same brewery that produces Tripel Karmeliet. The beer is a full-bodied beer with notes of caramel, toffee, and a hint of banana. But it’s the glass that makes it even more fun to drink!

Stella Artois

Crates of Stella Artois beer

An even more famous beer is Stella Artois. It is a very easy-drinking Belgian pilsner, brewed in the city of Leuven since 1926. It is well known in the beer world for its crisp, clean taste and refreshing finish. With its iconic logo and chalice glass, Stella Artois has become synonymous with Belgian beer culture and is enjoyed by millions of people around the world. You have probably had at least one glass in your travels.

Hoegaarden

Hoegaarden is another light Belgian beer, this time a witbier. It is known for its cloudy appearance, light body, and refreshing taste. It is actually brewed with a combination of wheat, coriander, and orange peel if you can imagine that. This gives Hoegaarden offers a unique flavor profile that is slightly sweet, citrusy, and spicy.

Kriek

Kriek from Lindemans

Last, but certainly not least is Kriek. This is a unique type of Belgian beer called a Lambic beer. It is produced by fermenting the base Lambic beer with sour cherries. This fruity and tart beer is known for its beautiful red color, distinctive cherry aroma, and slightly sweet taste. There are many variations of Kriek produced by different breweries, such as Lindemans, Cantillon, and Boon, each offering its own interpretation of this classic Belgian style.

If you’re planning a trip to Europe, don’t overlook the tiny country of Belgium. Tucked between France, Germany, the Netherlands, and the North Sea, the country offers everything from the regal to the provincial to the serious and the frivolous. Belgium is home to Brussels, its cosmopolitan capital city, and Bruges, an open-air museum for medieval architecture. Humorous statues, somber WWI memorials, and some of the world’s best chocolate and beer are just a few things on a lengthy list that Belgium is famous for.

Belgian Chocolate

Belgian Chocolate – Godiva Pralines

With its high cocoa levels, pure cocoa butter, and longer blending process, Belgian chocolate is the fiercest rival of Swiss chocolate in the world. The use of African heavy roast cocoa used by Belgian chocolatiers gives Belgian chocolate a strong fudgy flavor, medium sweet bitterness, and a straightforward taste. For example, Belgian milk chocolate has a classic milky flavor without the fruity undertones found in some varieties, and Belgian dark chocolate has an earthy flavor without any sourness or floral flavors.

Adding to the uniqueness of Belgian chocolate, Jean Neuhaus invented the praline in 1912, and Belgian chocolatiers came up with the world’s first filled chocolate bar with praline and the first chocolate spread.

Belgian chocolates became defined by truffles and molded pralines filled with buttercream or ganache that is whipped to be airy and light. They often include hazelnut as an ingredient base. The chocolates are molded into fancy shapes and sold in gift boxes.

Belgian Waffles

Belgian Waffles

Extra deep pockets perfect for filling with jam or maple syrup are what sets Belgian waffles apart from their American counterparts. They’re also thicker and made with a yeasted batter and pearl or nib sugar, a type of sugar popular in Europe for its large, pearl-like crystals. This gives them a unique texture and crunch.

Food historians have traced the waffle to ancient Greece where flat cakes were roasted between two metal plates attached to a long handle made of wood. The recipe for waffles evolved from generation to generation with cooks adding yeast to make them thicker and honey and spices brought back by explorers and crusaders.

During the 15th century, Dutch waffle makers were the first to use the grid pattern waffles are famous for.

According to legend, the Liège waffle was invented when the sweet-toothed Prince-Bishop of Liège in the region of Wallonia requested that his cook create a new sugary pastry. The cook made waffles using pearl sugar which caramelizes when cooked giving them a chewy texture.

The fluffy, golden Brussels waffles also became a famous favorite. A cook from Brussels by the name of Maurice Vermersch sold them from his stand at the 1964 World’s Fair in New York City and called them Belgian waffles. He didn’t think Americans would know where Brussels was so he called them Belgian waffles.

French Fries

Belgian fries sign

Did you know that French fries are not French? According to historians, they originated in Belgium where potatoes were fried in the 1600s.

Belgian folklore claims that French fries were first made by poor villagers in Meuse Valley when the river froze in winter and they couldn’t fry the small fish they usually caught in the river. They turned to slicing and frying potatoes in the same manner they prepared fish.

Today, French fries are one of the most popular side dishes around the world and are served with condiments like ketchup, mayonnaise, and even vinegar. So why are they called French fries? According to the Belgian tourism board, American servicemen who came to the country after WWI incorrectly called them French fries because of the French language spoken in Wallonia.

Today, around 5,000 “fritkots” (shacks or trailers) across the country sell Belgian fries in paper cones. Belgium is also home to the world’s first and only French Fry Museum.

Belgian Beer

Lots of different Belgian Beers

Anyone anywhere knows that Belgium is world-famous for its beer. It’s been said that it would take more than six years spent drinking beer in Belgium to have the same beer twice. Sources say more than 2,200 varieties of Belgian beer are available. The Delirium Cafe, a bar in Brussels holds a Guinness World Record for its menu of 2,004 beers.

The most popular Belgian beers are Trappest and Abbey beers. Trappest beers are brewed in monasteries and specific rules say the monks must play a role in production with profits from sales going to monasteries. Abbey beers are brewed monastery-style but can be brewed commercially under arrangement with a monastery.

Diamonds

Diamond

Belgium has had a relationship with the world’s most precious gemstone for nearly 5 centuries. Since the first rough stones were brought to the country from India, Antwerp has been the diamond capital of the world. The local diamond traders were known for their exquisite selection and detail, so much so that François I, the King of France insisted that his diamonds came from Antwerp’s master cutters rather than his own country.

Today, the Antwerp World Diamond Center (AWDC) is a private company that officially represents the Antwerp diamond sector. Established in 1973, the AWDC directs diamond import and export in and out of the city. Diamonds are sourced from thousands of diamond dealers around the world. Diamonds are shipped directly to Antwerp from Russian, South African, Canadian, and Australian mines.

Tomorrowland

Tomorrowland Festival – Image courtesy of aula2pl

Belgium is home to Tomorrowland, the biggest electronic music festival in the world and one of Europe’s most popular musical events. The one-of-a-kind festival takes place in Boom every year in the province of Antwerp where a population of fewer than 20,000 swells with music lovers from around the world.

Since its inception in 2005, Tomorrowland has been considered to be the god of all music festivals. With attendees from more than 200 countries, the festival features thousands of DJs and artists such as Vini Vici, Hardwell, Lost Stories, San Holo, Alan Walker, Oliver Heldens, and other well-known techno artists.

The Tomorrowland Festival has more than magical music. It also features 15 astoundingly designed stages that amaze the audience and a spectacular fireworks display at the end of each evening. But perhaps the most impressive thing of all about the festival is how in brings so many people from around the world together under one premise.

Waterloo

Battle of Waterloo (1815) © Wikipedia

On June 18, 1885, the famous Battle of Waterloo took place in Belgium. The battle marked the defeat of Napoleon Bonaparte, an aggressive dictator who conquered a large part of Europe in the early 19th century. After taking control of the French government in 1799, he became emperor in 1804.

Napoleon continued to expand his empire with the Napoleonic Wars across Central and Western Europe. His domination in Europe ended with the Battle of Waterloo led by the Prussians and the British led by the Duke of Wellington. It was a defeat of 72,000 troops of Napoleon’s army against 68,000 British forces which included Dutch, German, and Belgian troops.

Several blunders by Napoleon helped the outnumbered troops defeat his army. The region around Waterloo had experienced heavy rainfall the night before. He waited until the afternoon to attack, giving the ground a chance to dry out. The delay allowed 30,000 more Prussian troops to march into Waterloo. He also left Louis-Nicolas Davout, his best general back in Paris.

Fast fact: According to Belgian historian and former Waterloo resident Bernard Coppens, the Battle of Waterloo actually took place in the villages of Braine-l’Alleud and Plancenoit 3 miles south and Napoleon never set foot in Waterloo. But, you can still visit this famous landmark in Belgium, if you like :>

Brussels

Brussels, capital of Belgium

Brussels is one of the most exciting cities to visit in Europe. Strolling through the city, you’ll feel as if you’ve traveled back in time to the Middle Ages and the 19th century. Lovers of architecture, as well as culture, will find the city amazing.

The city has numerous world-famous sites to visit such as the Royal Palace, St. Nicholas Church, Basilica of the Sacred Heart, and many more. Brussels isn’t lacking in contemporary architecture either with buildings like Le Toison d’Or, the Black Pearl, and Rogier Tower.

As for culture, Brussels is one of the most cosmopolitan cities in the world. And you’ll find more cultural events here per capita than even New York City. Over 100 museums are scattered across Belgium, as well as dozens of theaters, art galleries, concert halls, and cultural centers.

Manneken Pis

Manneken Pis

One of the most endearing attractions in Brussels is a statue called Manneken Pis. It means little pee man in Flemish, and that’s exactly what it is. A piece of art from the 17th century., the bronze statue is a little boy just 61 centimeters tall and continually pees into a fountain.

Several legends tell the story of how the Manneken Pis came to be. One is the story of a traveling father who lost his little boy in the city. To show his gratitude to the villagers that helped find him, he gifted the statue to the city. Another says the boy was a spy that urinated on explosives during a siege of the city.

The city of Brussels includes Manneken Pis on holidays and special occasions. Brass bands play while the statue is hooked up to plenty of Belgian beer and poured for the public from his, uh “fountain tip.” He’s often dressed in national costumes from around the world and wears a Santa suit at Christmastime.

Saxophone

Saxophone

If you appreciate Jazz music, you love the sultry sound of the saxophone, but not many people know that the woodwind instrument is the invention of a Belgian musician and instrument maker. Adolf Sax was born in 1814 in Dinant, Belgium, and was the eldest of 11 siblings. His father, Charles Joseph Sax, owned an instrument factory and designed instruments. Adolf learned to make musical instruments from his father.

In 1841 when Adolf was 27 years, he presented his precious invention at the Industrial Exposition in Brussels. It was a woodwind instrument comprised of a single reed, a cone-shaped tube, and finger keys. His invention would later be known as a saxophone. His creation was patented in 1846.

Adolf Sax died in 1894 without knowing how successful his instrument became around the world and how much of a part of jazz music it became in the 20th century. Visitors in Belgium often visit the little town of Dinant to see where Adolf Sax, inventor of the saxophone lived and marvel at the saxophone sculptures around town.

Bruges

Bruges

Located in northwestern Belgium, Bruges, the capital of West Flanders is like stepping into a fairytale with its colorful buildings and cobbled streets. One of Europe’s best-preserved medieval cities, Burges is picturesque both day and at night when nocturnal lights flood the streets.

Bruges’ romantic canals have earned it the title “Venice of the North,” and its market squares are lined with ancient churches, towers, and whitewashed almshouses. In Burg Square, you can visit the 14th-century City Hall to admire its ornately carved ceiling, and in Markt Square, you’ll find a 13th-century belfry featuring a 47-bell carillon and a tower you can climb for panoramic views of the city.

One of the old city’s most striking examples of architecture, The Church of Our Lady Bruges is a 6-minute walk from the main Market Square and features flying buttresses and a 115-meter-high bell tower. Inside you’ll find Michelangelo’s marble sculpture of the Madonna and child and paintings by Sir Anthony van Dyck.

Football

Football in Belgium

International football began with a match in 1904 making it one of mainland Europe’s first countries to participate in association football. The team is now globally under the jurisdiction of FIFA and Europe’s UEFA both co-founded by the Royal Belgian Football Association. Home games are played at the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels

The national football team has participated in 14 FIFA world cups, six UEFA European Championships, and three Olympics football tournaments winning at the 1920 Summer Olympics. Between 1954 and 2002, the team won world championships over Brazil, West Germany, France, and Argentina.

Comic Books

Comic Books – The Smurf – Image courtesy of Linda De Volder

While Belgium is noteworthy for its historical sites, Belgian beer, and Belgian chocolate, it can’t be overlooked for its contribution to the world of comics. Over the years, creative and witty comic writers have made Belgium the country with the most comic creators and illustrators in the world.

Some of the most recognizable comic strips that were born in Belgium and date back to the 1940s and include The Smurfs, Lucky Luke, Tintin, Gaston, and Spirou et Fantasio. It’s clear that along with France, Belgium has played a major role in the creation of European comics.

Brussels is the best place to experience Begium’s comics. A stroll down Comic Route is a must-do while visiting the city where you will see facades featuring over 40 comic book characters. The loveable characters can also be seen on buildings around the city’s center and the neighborhoods of Auderghem and Laeken. And of course, you’ll find the characters in a smattering of comic book stores.

Flanders Fields

Flanders Fields

Straddling the provinces of East Flanders, West Flanders, and the French department of Nord-Pas-de-Calais, Belgium’s Flanders Fields was a major battlefield area during WWI. More than a million soldiers representing 50 countries lost their lives or were wounded there.

Flanders Fields actively embraces the phrase “Lest We Forget” and memorializes those brave souls in many ways including the Last Post bugle call in honor of the British who died in battle performed every evening at sunset at the Menin Gate in Ypres. The In Flanders Fields Museum in Ypres is dedicated to the study of the First World War.

Also, people around the world are familiar with the poem “In Flanders Fields” written by John McCrae. The poem inspired the use of the red poppy flower as a symbol of remembrance of the lives lost here. The poem refers to the poppies growing from the chared and scared earth. The poem was published anonymously on December 8, 1915, and became the world’s most popular poem about war.

In the United States, volunteers for the American Veterans Association pass out red paper poppies for or without a donation every year on Veteran’s Day (November 11.)

Three Official Languages

Belgium has historically been largely influenced by its neighboring countries of France, Germany, and the Netherlands. As a result, the country has three official languages and none of them is Belgian. Dutch is the predominant language spoken in the province of Flanders and French is the language of Wallonia. German is spoken in a small area in the eastern Liège province near the German border.

For the majority of Belgians (roughly 60 percent ) Dutch is their first language. French is spoken by about 40 percent of the population. Dutch is the official language of the Flanders region and is one of the Brussels Capital Region’s official languages. The Flanders region also has sub-dialects. Depending on where you are you can detect East Flemish, West Flemish, Limburgish, and Brabantian dialects.

The Atomium

The Atomium in Brussels

Although Belgium is mostly known for its older styles of architecture and historical sites, the Atomium is a popular modern symbol of the country. Serving as the main pavilion of the 1958 World Fair Expo in Brussels, the structure is a model of an atom enlarged 165 billion times.

Like the Eiffel Tower in Parus, the Atomium was scheduled to be dismantled after the end of the exhibition. But thanks to its great popularity, authorities decided to leave it standing. Today, it represents the country’s forward look and universality. Temporary and permanent collections are housed in the spheres. The topmost one has a restaurant where you can dine with views of the Belgian capital.

The EU

Did you know that Belgium is one of the founding members of the EU? The country founded the European Union, France, Italy, West Germany, the Netherlands, and Luxembourg in 1957. Today, the capital of Brussels is home to several European institutions and is known as the unofficial capital of Europe.

In the European quarter of Brussels, you’ll find the European Parliament, the European Commission, the Council of the EU, and more. Belgium is also a founding member of NATO, WTO, OECD, and the Eurozone.

Jean-Claude Van Damme

Jean-Claude Van Damme – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

Born and raised in Brussels, Jean-Claude Van Damme is a famous Belgian action star who claims the title of “living legend.” The icon of martial arts and action in the cinema has played many roles. He was born in 1960 in Sint-Agatha Berchem and began training at the age of 10.

Van Damme moved to the United States in 1982 where he became an actor known as the “Muscles from Brussels.” He landed roles as an extra in 1984’s Breakin’ and other films. Eventually, he was offered and accepted a role as the titular alien hunter in Predator. He also starred in the 1988 film Bloodsport. Classic action movies you’ll spot him in include Cyborg, Kickboxer, Lionheart, and Double Impact.

Best Christmas Markets

If you’re looking for the best European Christmas markets to visit during the holiday season, add Belgium to your itinerary. In Brussels, you can stroll along the Grand Place to shop and admire the Christmas tree which has been ranked among the best in Europe.

The city of Bruges provides a romantic Christmas getaway where you can stroll around the markets, ride the Ghent Ferris Wheel, and go ice skating.

The city of Liège also has a magical Christmas Village that grows bigger and better year after year. Other lively Christmas markets can be found in Louvain-La-Neuve, Leuven, and Ostend.

Record Holder for Longest Period Without A Government

If you had to guess what country went without a government for the longest time, you’d probably pick Iraq or another war-torn country. But the Iraqis went without a government for 289 days while Belgium spent 541 days before selecting an official administration. It happened back in 2010 and 2011 and made Belgium have the longest period without a government of any developed country.

To top that off, Belgium broke its own record in 2020 when the country spent an unbelievable 589 days without a government.

Belgium’s statues honor its warriors, national heroes, and artistic geniuses. They portray the nation’s rich history and range from the amusing Manneken Pis and Jeanneke Pis to tributes to famous artists like Peter Paul Rubens and Jan van Eyck.

These masterpieces maintain Belgium’s heritage and celebrate its vibrant energy and unique character and are worthy of a visit as you travel through its streets.

Manneken Pis

Manneken Pis in Brussels

Arguably the most well-known statue in Belgium, Manneken Pis can be found right in Brussels. Created early in the 17th century by Hieronymus Duquesnoy the Elder, it humorously depicts a small boy urinating into a fountain.

Not only is this tiny statue famous but it is also dressed up in a variety of costumes at different times of the year. So, be sure to check it out a few times if you are in the area.

Statue of Godfrey of Bouillon

Located in the Royal Square in Brussels, this equestrian statue commemorates the famous medieval knight, Godfrey of Bouillon. He is said to have played a crucial role in the First Crusade, after selling his land and gathering thousands of knights to fight in the Crusade. The sculpture was created by Eugène Simonis in 1848 and commemorates his participation in the crusade, which has since become something of a legend.

Jeanneke Pis

Jeanneke Pis in Brussels

Created by Denis Adrien Debouvrie in 1987, this is the answer to Manneken Pis. Jeanneke Pis is a small limestone statue that shows a girl squatting and peeing. It is also in Brussels, this time in a small alleyway. So, if you liked Manneken Pis, find your way here as well.

Zinneke Pis (Het Zinneke)

Zinneke Pis in Brussels – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

Continuing with the peeing statue theme is Zinneke Pis, also in Brussels. This time it was created in bronze of a urinating dog by artist Tom Frantzen and erected in 1998.

Brabo Fountain (Brabo Monument)

Brabo Fountain in Grote Markt Antwerp

Moving to Antwerp, the Brabo monument statue atop the Brabo fountain is a symbol of Antwerp itself. It sits in the center of Grote Markt, right in the heart of Antwerp. There is quite a story behind the figure, so it is worth going a little bit deeper.

Brabo apparently slew Druon Antigoon, a giant who had demanded money from anyone wishing to cross the bridge over the Scheldt River. If they could not pay, he hacked off their hand and threw it in the river. Brabo took on the giant and removed his hand, hurling it also into the river. This is the moment you see portrayed in the statue.

Peter Paul Rubens Statue

Peter Paul Rubens Statue in Groenplaats, Antwerp

Another statue worth seeing in the heart of Antwerp is that of Paul Rubens in Antwerp’s Groenplaats. He is one of the most influential Baroque painters and definitely deserves a statue in his hometown. The sculpture was created by Willem Geefs in 1840 and erected in the square some three years later in honor of this famous Belgian artist.

Pieter Appelmans Monument

Pieter Appelmans Monument outside Antwerp Cathedral

On the right-hand side of the entrance to the Antwerp Cathedral is the monument to Pieter Appelmans. He was one of the architects of the cathedral. He completed the work after the passing of his late father, Jans Appelmans.

The statue depicts Pieter Appelmans along with stone masons and builders and was created by Belgian sculptor Jef Lambeaux.

Nello & Patrasche

Nello & Patrasche outside the Antwerp Cathedral

Right in front of the Antwerp Cathedral is another heartwarming statue that pays homage to the main characters from the 19th-century novel “A Dog of Flanders” by British author Marie Louise de la Ramée (Ouida). Interestingly the novel is popular in Japan and tells the story of Nello, a poor orphan boy, and Patrasche, his loyal dog.

The Cyclist

The Cyclist – Jean-Pierre Monseré – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

The Cyclist is a bronze statue in Roeselare, honoring the champion Belgian cyclist Jean-Pierre Monseré. He was killed by an oncoming car during a race in 1971 and this statue was created by artist Godfried Vanneste to commemorate this. He is said to have been a brilliant all-around cyclist who could have even rivaled Eddy Merckx, but unfortunately, we will never know if that was true.

Ambiorix Statue

Ambiorix Statue in Tongeren – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

Belgium’s rich linguistic and cultural background shapes its complex political scene. Being a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy, the country’s federal, regional, and linguistic community entities share power. Belgium’s lively political environment is fueled by its multi-party system and EU influence.

Belgium’s political system and governing body

Belgium is a federal parliamentary constitutional monarchy.. This means that the Belgian King is a symbolic leader and the Prime Minister and federal government hold the actual power in the country.

The Belgian federal parliament consists of two chambers: just as it does in many Western democracies. There is a Chamber of Representatives and a Senate. The members of these two chambers are voted in by the Belgian population.

Belgium’s Political Representation

The Senate and the 150-member Chamber of Representatives make up the bicameral Belgian Federal Parliament (60 members). The Senate is made up of senators from the regional parliaments and linguistic community parliaments, whereas the Chamber of Representatives is chosen using a proportional representation system.

Communities and Regions

Belgium’s political system is further complicated, however, but the way the country is split up into communities and regions. These areas are given specific autonomy to help solve language, cultural, and geographical differences that are strongly present in the country.

For example, there are three regions in Belgium (Flanders, Wallonia and Brussels-Capital) as well as three official languages. Each of the relevant parts of the country then get to organise relevant issues locally such as education and culture for the language communities and employment, agriculture, environment, energy, housing and even foreign trade for the regions.

This is quite a special set up that only a country with Belgium’s history and structure has.

First state reform in 1970

Many of these language and regional differences came into being during the first tensions between the Dutch-speaking Flanders and the French-speaking Wallonia led to the first state change in 1970. It was at this time that the three language communities were founded, and the decentralization and federalization processes were started as well.

All of this lead to the complex political structure that is present in Belgium today.

Belgian government’s major political parties

The political landscape of Belgium is multi-party, with the major parties split along linguistic lines. Important political parties are:

New Flemish Alliance (N-VA) – Flemish nationalist, conservative

Christian Democratic and Flemish (CD&V) – Flemish, Christian democratic

Open Flemish Liberals and Democrats (Open Vld) – Flemish, liberal

Socialist Party (PS) – Walloon, social-democratic

Reformist Party (MR) – Walloon, liberal

Belgium and the European Union

Belgium was a key contributor to the development of EU policy as a founding member of the organization. The European Commission, the European Council, and the European Parliament are all located in Brussels, the EU’s capital city, which serves as its de facto seat of government.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have the right to vote in Belgian elections?

Elections for the federal, regional, and European levels are open to Belgian citizens who are 18 years of age and older. Elections in Europe and locally are open to EU residents living in Belgium, but not federal or regional elections. Residents of non-EU countries must apply for Belgian citizenship in order to vote.

Hey there, fellow foodies! Today, we’re going to take a delicious journey into the world of Belgian cuisine. Belgium may be a small country, but it has a lot to offer when it comes to food. From savory dishes to mouthwatering desserts, the Belgians have got it all figured out. So, let’s dive into some of the most traditional and popular Belgian foods, shall we?

Belgian Fries (aka French Fries)

Home made Belgian Fries

You might be thinking, “Wait, aren’t all fries – French fries?” Well, it’s time to set the record straight: Belgian fries are the original!

These crispy golden treats are usually served in a cone-shaped paper wrapper, and they are thicker and fluffier than their American counterparts. They are often enjoyed with mayonnaise or a variety of sauces and can be found at fry shops (friteries in French, frietkot/frituur in Flemish) all over the country.

Flemish Beef Stew (Stoofvlees, Carbonnades Flamandes)

Flemish Beef Stew wit Fries, aka Stoofvlees – Image courtesy of Visit Flanders on Flickr

Flemish beef stew, or stoofvlees, is a hearty Belgian dish made with chunks of beef slow-cooked in a rich beer-based sauce with onions, thyme, and bay leaves. It’s often served with bread, fries, or mashed potatoes to soak up all that scrumptious gravy. This comforting meal is perfect for cold winter days, or anytime you’re craving some good ol’ home cooking.

Mussels with Fries (Moules-Frites)

Mussels for lunch in Belgium

If you’re a seafood lover, this classic Belgian dish is for you. Mussels are steamed in a savory broth of white wine, garlic, onions, and herbs, then served with a heaping side of—you guessed it—Belgian fries! This popular meal can be found in restaurants throughout the country, especially during the summer months when mussels are in season.

Eel Stew (Paling in’t groen, Anguille au vert)

Eel stew (aka Anguille au vert) – Image courtesy of Wikimedia

Another traditional Belgian favorite is eel stew. Sure, it might sound a little gross, but give it a shot if you are in Belgium.

This dish features tender eel cooked in a flavorful green sauce made from a mix of herbs, like parsley, tarragon, and chervil. It’s a unique and tasty combination that’s typically served with boiled potatoes or bread.

Endive with Ham and Cheese Sauce (Witloof met kaas en hesp, Chicon au jambon)

This creamy, comforting dish consists of an endive (a leafy green vegetable) wrapped in ham, smothered in a velvety cheese sauce, and baked to perfection. It’s a popular meal during the colder months and pairs perfectly with a glass of Belgian beer.

Personally, I find endives to be quite bitter, but some people love this dish. So, if you are up for something new and interesting, this might be just the ticket.

Vol-au-vent (Koninginnehapje)

Vol-au-vent (Koninginnehapje)

Vol-au-vent, or “Koninginnehapje” in Flemish, is a light, flaky puff pastry filled with a savory chicken and mushroom cream sauce. This dish is perfect for a more fancy dinner or special occasion, and it’s just as tasty as it is elegant. The trick is getting the pastry right. Or, if you are like me, find someone who can cook it well.

Cheese Croquettes

Cheese Croquettes

These irresistible, deep-fried balls of cheesy goodness are made from a mixture of cheese, béchamel sauce, and breadcrumbs. Cheese croquettes are a popular appetizer in Belgium, and they are often served with a side of salad or dipping sauce.

I love a bowl full of these every time I am in Belgium, even if it feels a little naughty to be eating so many of them!

Meatballs in Cherry Sauce (Frikadellen met Krieken)

This sweet and savory dish features tender meatballs smothered in a tangy cherry sauce. It’s a popular meal in the Flanders region and can be found in many Belgian homes and restaurants.

Flemish Asparagus (Asperges op Vlaamse wijze, Asperges à la flamande)

Flemish Asparagus – Image courtesy of VISITFLANDERS

This simple, yet elegant dish highlights the delicate flavor of asparagus, a much loved vegetable in Belgium. Traditionally served during the spring asparagus season, Flemish asparagus is boiled or steamed and topped with a mixture of chopped hard-boiled eggs, melted butter, and fresh parsley. It’s a delightful and healthy meal option for those who appreciate the finer things in life.

Waterzooi

List of Belgian Food Specialities in Antwerp

Originating from the Belgian city of Ghent, waterzooi is a creamy stew made with either chicken or fish, along with vegetables such as carrots, leeks, and potatoes. This hearty dish is perfect for warming you up on a chilly day, and it’s often enjoyed with a side of crusty bread.

Waffles (Liege Waffles & Brussels Waffles)

Ordering a Belgian Waffle in Antwerp

You can’t talk about Belgian food without mentioning waffles! Belgium is home to two main types of waffles: Liege and Brussels.

Liege waffles are made of a denser, yeast dough with pearl sugar pieces mixed in. The batter cooks with a crispy outside and a delicious sweet gooey inside with small treats of caramalised sugar throughout. They are typically served without topping, but in restaurants, people sometimes go crazy and add all sorts of things.

Brussels waffles are quite a bit larger, extremely light, and square in shape. They are usually served with either powered sugar or whipped cream on top, to make them even better. I find these waffles so light you can always go for a second one!

No matter which type you prefer, Belgian waffles are a must-try when visiting the country.

Speculoos (Speculaas)

The popular Speculoos – Lotus Biscoff in Delhaize Supermarkets

These spiced shortcrust cookies are a staple in Belgian cuisine, especially during the winter holidays. Speculaas are typically made with a blend of spices, such as cinnamon, nutmeg, cloves, and ginger, giving them a warm and comforting flavor.

At the beginning of December, you will find huge versions of this tasty treat often made in the form of Sinter Klaas. This is a popular holiday before Christmas when Belgian children not only get lots of these cookies but also presents and chocolate figurines.

Speculoos has also become famous around the world thanks to the Lotus company which makes a very sweet version of these biscuits, often called Biscoff outside of Belgian. They are often given with coffee or tea, and I can honestly say, they are great to tip in your hot beverage of choice!

Tarte au Riz – Rice Tart

A traditional Belgian dessert, tarte au riz is a creamy rice pudding baked in a pastry crust. It’s often flavored with vanilla and sometimes topped with a dusting of powdered sugar or a dollop of whipped cream. This sweet treat is perfect for satisfying your sweet tooth after a filling Belgian meal.

Belgian Chocolates

Belgian Chocolates – Pralines from Godiva

Last, but certainly not least, Belgian chocolates are renowned worldwide for their exceptional quality and taste. With a rich history dating back to the 17th century, Belgian chocolatiers have honed their craft to create some of the finest chocolates in the world. From pralines and truffles to chocolate bars and hot cocoa, there’s something to delight every chocolate lover in Belgium.

Personally, I love going into the store at the Brussels Airport just before departing. Or, if you have more time, maybe into a Leonidis store in one of the cities to get a box of fresh pralines (a Belgian invention). It is well worth the effort.

Another thing you can do is just stock up on the likes of Cote Dor chocolate from the supermarket. It is insanely good for store-bought chocolate!

And there you have it, a casual stroll through the mouthwatering world of Belgian food! These traditional dishes are just a small sample of what this delightful European country has to offer, but they’re sure to leave a lasting impression on your taste buds. So the next time you find yourself in Belgium or craving some Belgian cuisine, be sure to give these dishes a try. Bon appétit!
